Avocado Farming: A Viable And Sustainable Business Venture. By Peter Owinje.

Granot in Israel produces one third of Israel’s total avocado production with over 1.5 billion US Dollar as annual revenue. In addition, avocado plantation is a source of income or livelihood for more than 30, 000 farmers in Mexico. Furthermore, Michoacan a state in Mexico, has approximately 106, 000 hectares which is about 250, 000 acres for avocado farming \ production.  Avocado farming has become a notable source of income to many successful famers around the world, and source of global wealth for many nations and their citizens therein. An article posted on March 7, 2023, by Farmers Trend, reveals that one avocado tree  (Hass) can produce more than 250 fruits and   1, 000 fruits depending on the year. For better understanding, kindly consider the prices of avocado import to the UK from the following countries, by March, 2023, avocado price of one ton was $2, 723, in the UK. While by March, 2023, the avocado price per ton was $3, 884 from Spain. Also, by March 2023, the price was 3, 190 US Dollar per ton from Chile. Moreover, by March, 2023, the price was 3, 019 US Dollar per ton from Israel. Etc.

It’s important to note that an hectare of land can produce more than 20 tons of avocado, you can imagine how much a farmer would make on hectares of land. Avocado farming is highly profitable! However, one of the farming businesses that generate huge wealth for both the farmers and a nation is avocado farming business. For instance, in 2021 over 800,000 metric tonnes of avocados were imported to Europe, which was approximately to be 1.8 billion euros. Globally, the demand for avocado fruits is high in the global market, due to increase in demand by individuals for consumption around the world, which is largely due to its possession of various nutrients contents, and because of its industrial usage in the food industries, pharmaceutical industries and cosmetic industries. The demand for avocado will continue to grow higher, every year. For instance, Kenya, an African country is approximately exporting two million metric tons of avocado every year. In 2022, Colombia exported 99, 000 metric tons of avocado. In 2022, Chile exported 59, 000 metric tons of avocado. Without doubt avocado or pear has already become the second most important imported fruit from developing countries. Thereby, creating more room for farmers or people to tap into the avocado global wealth.

However, as the demand for avocado keeps growing every year in international market, various countries are already engaged in avocado global business. Among them are the United States, Netherlands, France and Germany as the largest importers of avocado respectively, while some other countries fully engaged in avocado farming or production which they are also suppliers to Europe. Such countries are Mexico, Dominican Republic, Peru, Indonesia, Colombia, Brazil, South Africa, Kenya, the United States, Spain, Venezuela, Israel, Morocco, Tanzania, Mozambique, Chile, Ethiopia, New Zealand, Belgium and China. However, in Asia countries, importers of avocado are Japan, China and South Korea.

Truly speaking, avocado farming is a viable and sustainable business venture which explains while people in countries named above are into the business, in other to tap into its global wealth. For example, avocado plantation in Israel is about 7, 000 hectares which they are expected to produce over 115, 000 metric tons of avocado. For instance, Michoacan in Mexico has 106, 000 hectares which is about 260, 000 acres of land for avocado plantation. While, Peru allocated approximately 60, 000 hectares for avocado farming or plantation. More so, Texas A&M University reveals that avocado imports have positively benefited the U.S. by growing both its national and state economies significantly. Those who know the potential wealth hidden in avocado industry never take it for granted.

It’s worthy to note that, Netherland, is not a notable producer of avocado but it’s the largest exporter of avocado in the world.  The country imports avocado in large quantity and re-export it in smaller quantity to other countries in other to tap into the avocado global wealth. Likewise, in Texas in the U.S. is not a notable producer of avocado yet the state i.e. [Texas] is fully involved in avocado business importation through Texas food companies. In 2022 the U.S. imported 2, 497, 396 metric tons of avocado. Source, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA ERS). In 2021, the United Kingdom imported 114,000 metric tons of avocado into the country. This explanations show to you that avocado is a perfect means for a viable global business.

Furthermore, Spain engages in avocado farming business, in 2021.Eurostat reveals that Spain produced over 116,000 metric tonnes, with this, Spain still imported 214,000 metric tonnes of avocado, while in 2021 Italy imported 42,000 metric tonnes of avocado. In July 2023, between 80, 000 to 100, 000 metric tons of avocados were estimated export to the U.S. from Jalisco alone, a coastal state in Mexico. Source, Association of Avocado Production of Jalisco. However, the largest producer of avocado crop in the world is Mexico, supplying 45% of the global avocado market. This explanation is to show to you that avocado is a perfect means for a viable global business, and to note that, the import and export of avocado are growing fast in the international market, which create huge global wealth or income to the participants at all levels.

More importantly, avocado farming or business, if properly harnessed, has the potential not only to create wealth but also to create a lot of jobs to reduce drastically the unemployment rate in any given nation, thereby, solving a global problem as well. For example, Mexico avocado production alone, provides close to 78, 000 direct and permanent jobs and 310, 000 indirect and seasonal jobs. Furthermore, in just one year, Texas avocado imports businesses alone generated more than 510 million US Dollar in economic activity and approximately, 2,500 jobs, [2019—2020]. Furthermore, notable avocado producer from Israel i.e. {Maris & Granot} are to develop a 390 hectare of avocado plantation in Naivasha, Kenya, with $8 million USD investment from AgDevCo which will create approximately 2. 000, jobs.

At this point, the writer hopes that the readers will also agree with the writer that there’s a huge potential for commercial production of avocado fruits for export. Like I have noted above, the increase in demand of avocado fruits from China, from the U.S. and from Europe at large in global market shows that avocado business is a good opportunity for healthy wealth accumulation, for a nation and her people. Avocado industry improves the economy of a country in different ways such as, increasing the output, value=added=income, job creation, taxes, and as well as improving human health. Avocado market is robust. Therefore, investing in avocado industry is a potential means to tap into this global wealth. Indeed, avocado farming is a viable and a sustainable business venture!
