Depression may appear to be a natural occurrence when someone suddenly finds himself/herself in unwanted situation. For instance, loss of job, loss of loved ones, amongst others may usher in depression naturally. At least one would not be happy, if he or she is out of lucrative job for months. A person may also not be happy, if he or she loses any of his or her loved ones. Likewise, it could be painful, if one gets to know that what some people say about one is negatively different from whom one really is. In a situation like this, depression may happen as a normal occurrence. In addition, some people may take it for granted by allowing it to linger and then later become a difficult problem that affects their health. Depression may occur or be perceived from different angles or ways with different reasons. Let’s take for example, a person may become very sad about a particular situation e.g. salary reduction, relegation e.g. demoting or relegating someone from the position of General Manager to Assistant Office Manager etc. Another situation, is a society with a very poor economic system where many people live in abject poverty without jobs, economic depression may also set in. It may also be viewed as a medical condition or chronic medical illness, where someone who feels very sad and worry is unable to think, eat, sleep etc. For instance, people who are suffering from chronic cancer or a heart disease etc., may likely to experience depression due to their health challenges.
Depression affects fairly large number of people in any given society because it comes in different ways, due to an unfavourable condition or incident that a person may experience at the moment. It may also come due to broken relationship, failed marriage, joblessness, political crisis, economic crisis or financial crisis, insecurity, failure in exam, bankruptcy, business failure, road accident or industrial accident (where one may be seriously injured etc.), environmental problems e.g. heavy floods, wild fire, hurricane, etc., amongst others. Kindly, don’t allow any unfavourable situation put you in a state of acute depression. Truly, it’s not good to experience any of these unwanted situations, yet it’s not good as well to allow it affect your health. Hence, the saying “Two wrong things can never make a right” .So, beware of depression! It’s dangerous to your health.
Depression seems to be deepening when you refuse to deliberately come out of it, and this affects millions of people in the world. For instance, The Washington Post reveals in one of its articles that depression affects about 280 million people worldwide. It attributes its source to data from World Health Organization (WHO) and also a report from World Psychiatric Association Commission. Furthermore, an article published by National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), also reveals that “Depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the United States”. It’s important to note that some people have committed suicide out of depression. Truly speaking, depression is dangerous because it, often, comes with negative results. In view of these facts, it’s clear that depression is majorly responsible to the sufferings millions of people are passing through around the world.
Depression, at first, may be mild, i.e. not serious. This is why the writer sees it as normal or natural occurrence when you find yourself in an unwanted situation, even if a man is tagged ‘the most happiest man’ on earth, occasionally he may experience days when he’s frustrated or depressed, but when you refuse to get out of it in time, it may gradually worsen and become severe. At this view stage, depression is oftentimes a public nuisance and severe medical illness that affects how fair largely number of people feel, think and how they act. If taken for granted, it may result to various emotional and physical problems that may reduce your ability or competence to act at home or at work or better still, reduce your general capability for doing something. Therefore, depression is avoidable, and it may be considered as part of life, but suffering from it is a choice! So, be warned! Depression is dangerous!
As depression is affecting fairly large number of people around the world, the writer believes that it’s high time to educate the public about depression, the risk involved, the likely symptoms and the need to urgently seek treatment. It’s important to note that many people are suffering from depression in various ways like having a feeling of hopelessness, frustration, worthlessness, deep sadness, sleeplessness, fatigue, headaches, loss of interest in things you like doing, loss of appetite, feelings of isolation from friends and family, amongst others. You don’t need to suffer from any of these consequences of depression. You don’t need to think more negatively about yourself and the world at large. Don’t allow depression deepen gradually in your heart stand against it with passion and set your mind free from it. It’s avoidable!
Do you also know that a pregnant woman can also suffer from psychological depression, after giving birth or after the baby is born? This kind of depression is called postnatal depression or postpartum depression. This kind comes with negative consequences such as social withdrawal, difficulty in mother-baby bonding, etc. In addition, the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that “Psychological and pharmacological treatments exist for depression. However, in low-and middle-income countries, treatment and support services for depression are often absent or underdeveloped. It is estimated that more than 75% of people suffering from mental disorders in these countries do not receive treatment. ”With this reports from the WHO, you can imagine the high risks depression may pose to people living in developing countries where treatment for acute depression is underdeveloped or completely unavailable. This underscores while you need to get out of depression early enough when it’s relatively mild.
Generally, another notable fact is that, emotional pain may be invisible, but the consequences can be felt in the heart and shown in the body language of the victim. This often comes with highly negative consequences.. For example, both Medical News Today and Cleveland clinic reveal that, “depression accounts for nearly 40,000 cases of suicide each year in the United States.” Having considered the negative consequences of depression, it would be helpful if you did everything in your power to get out of it. Try as much as possible to remain focused on the things that matter to your best health status. Allow your overwhelming feelings of sadness or worthlessness to go out of your mind, don’t allow depression to weigh you down in any way. You are not hopeless as you may think when you are depressed, and if you are facing the daily hardship of poverty, consequently, it may be difficult for you to set goals, let alone achieving them. Yet, never worry, it will still be over as life continues. At all times, remember that the unwanted condition you are likely to face at the moment is not permanent, and as life continues, there’s better hope for you, if you don’t give up, you deserve happiness and peace, so, always have a strong desire for healthy future, happiness and peace of mind. Once again, depression may appear to be part of life, but suffering from it, is a choice you made!
