Drinking-water is a tasteless liquid without colour. Water is one of the most essential items for human survival. The habit of drinking adequate water daily helps to support the human body detoxification system or internal organs. This is mainly carried out by the liver and kidneys, to clean your stomach from all toxic substances that may want to store up in the body and also helps to correct the lymphatic system. The lymph is “ a clear liquid containing white blood cells that helps to clean the tissues of the body and helps to prevent infections from spreading” (Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary). A balanced lymphatic system can build a strong immune system which can keep you from getting sick. So, water is essential to human health because it supports the healthy immune system.
Water also improves the digestive system where food taken can be easily converted into the energy and the nutrients needed for growth and sustenance of life. Water aids all digestive and absorptive functions within the human body. In other words, without water, absorption and digestion of food may be difficult, if not impossible. It improves the appropriate functioning of the human internal organs. The internal organs and tissues in your body rely on water to function well. For instance, water supports the smooth flow of blood around the body. It also controls the body temperature etc.
Furthermore, water also prevents kidney stone. Portis and Sundaram (2001) , revealed that the most factor influencing or causing kidney stone formation is reduction or decreased in fluid intake. Kidney stone is a stony concentration that forms in the organ connected with human body. Based on this fact, it’s advisable to take reasonable amount of fluid such as tea, milk, fruit juice, etc., while also increase water consumption.
Moreover, water consumption can prevent bladder cancer, (Altieri, La Vecchia and Negri, 2003 ) revealed that low water intake or fluid intake will increase the amount of carcinogens in the urine which is dangerous to the bladder. Carcinogen has the potential to cause adverse health effects after prolong periods of exposure in the bladder. Carcinogen is a substance that can cause cancer. Therefore, it is important to take adequate water daily to prevent cancer of the bladder.
Furthermore, there’s fluoride in drinking-water which increases prevention against dental caries. Fluoride prevents tooth decay while dental caries is a disease of the tooth that can damage the structure of the tooth. Water contains mineral fluoride which prevents tooth decay. Fluoride helps to rebuild and strengthen the tooth’s surface. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the U.S. reveals that close to 75 percent of the U.S. has access to fluoridated water. The article further reveals that North American water systems added fluoride to their water supplies since 1945, simply to prevent tooth decay which consequently, has drastically reduced child cavity rates by 20-40 percent, where fluoridation has been implemented according to the American Dental Association. However, the fluoridation is seen or rated by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the U.S. as one of the top ten greatest public health achievements of the past century in the U.S.
In addition, like I noted above, drinking-water is important to maintain life and adequate intake of it daily has huge benefits for your health. Drinkable water is fundamental to your well-being. Hence, individuals have a role to play to ensure that adequate quality water consumption is maintained daily and not compromised.
