Maize is one of the leading grains in the world with an annual production of more than 1.2 billion metric tons. Maize constitutes a staple food in many regions of the world. However, owing to its greater adaptation to different ecological systems and strong demand for different products made of maize such as bio ethanol, animal feed, sweeteners, starch and other non-food industrial products and food industrial products that are acceptable for export, and couple with the production of various indigenous foods, such as maize meal, flour, cooking oil, amongst others, maize cultivation is a good business for farmers to make a lot of money.

The high demand and use of maize for fuel production and its low production costs give the farmers a better chance to maximize huge profit. Planting and harvesting of maize takes only 90 to 120 days. In addition, a short period of cultivation with high profit margin is another reason to consider corn plantation as a good business. Maize has an enormous market potential, and its production is highly profitable. All categories of maize farmers be it large, medium or small holder farmers will surely make profits.

As the demand for maize continues to rise at unprecedented rates in international market, I believe that there are still more opportunities for many investors to go into maize plantation. Also, it has the potentials to aid food security, reduce poverty, create jobs and export its surplus crops to make much healthy profit for the farmers. In fact, there are industries that rely on maize as raw material for their various products. Therefore, corn plantations, if properly harnessed, can play a critical role in economic transformation through the development of agro-based industries that bring much needed jobs and incomes.

Due to a huge potential market in maize cultivation, efforts should be geared towards making maize production business more viable through good polices, sustained public and private investments. This may encourage more people to tap into the buoyant maize business or markets. It’s equally important for government to play a role in promoting agribusiness in general which will, in turn, encourage both the public and private sectors to participate in this business venture.

Thank you!
